Select text anywhere and press ⌘⇧A. Gist rewrites, summarises or fixes it right where you wrote it — Mail, Safari, Slack, Notion, VS Code, anywhere. Free on-device AI included, so your text can stay on your Mac.
The old way
Every time you want AI to help with your writing, this is what you go through — right now, today.
Gist replaces all 9 steps — instantly, from anywhere, in any app you already use.
Highlight the email you received, press ⌘⇧A, and watch Gist draft a polished, professional reply in real-time — right inside Mail, Spark, Airmail, or Outlook.
Select any block of text — an article, PDF, document, email — press ⌘⇧A and get clear bullet points in seconds. Then save to Notes, Obsidian, or Bear with one tap.
Press ⌘⇧A with nothing selected and the same panel opens as a floating chat. Ask anything, get answers, then send the result straight to Obsidian, Notes or Bear — without switching apps.
Press ⌘⇧T and talk. Gist transcribes as you speak, then turns the rambling version into something you'd actually be happy to send — without you retyping a word of it.
On-device AI — included free
Client documents. Unreleased code. Salary conversations. Anything under an NDA. Nearly half of knowledge workers admit pasting non-public company information into AI tools, and a quarter of employers have banned them outright because of it. Gist ships with a model that runs on your Mac, so there's nothing to leak.
All three are free and included. Want a frontier model for the heavy work? Add your own OpenAI, Anthropic or OpenRouter key — you pay them directly, at cost, and it never routes through us.
Built for rewriting, summarising and fixing grammar — not for general world knowledge.
Universal
Gist uses macOS Accessibility to work in every app — no plugins, no extensions, no configuration.
Beta testers
"I used Elephas for two years and kept hoping it'd get better. Gist works in every app without any fiddling — and the local AI is genuinely fast on my M3. Worth every penny of the one-time price."
"The voice dictation is the killer feature for me. I speak, it transcribes, then drafts the email. I reply to 3x more messages in the same time. The $29 price is almost insulting — this should cost more."
"I was sceptical about another AI tool, but the local AI model is what got me. My notes never leave my Mac. I summarise research papers in Safari then save to Obsidian in one click. Daily driver."
The permission question
It's a fair thing to hesitate over — macOS warns you about it, and it should. Here's exactly what it's for, and exactly what Gist does not do with it.
macOS blocks every third-party app — including this one — from reading password fields. It's the same permission Raycast, Alfred, TextExpander and Rectangle ask for. You can revoke it any time in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility, and Gist will simply stop working rather than fall back to anything sneakier.
